The two criteria I look for in a food are organics and local products. Bob's Red Mill is a company in one of Portland's neighboring towns, Milwaukie. Their primary products are natural and organic milled grains. Recently the owner of the company decided to retire, and handed the business over to the employees via employee stock plans.
I like this brand because it is honest and pure. I can visit the facility where it is produced and see the workers. I can visit the fields where the grains are harvested. I can shake hands with those who feed me. The products they produce are simple, wholesome, and nourishing.
I could just buy cheaper flour from a bag in the baking isle, but I have no idea where it came from, what was sprayed on it, and how the people who produced it were treated.
